The Lighthouse Therapy Centre, Puchong is a team of professional and passionate therapists who specialise in providing special needs services for children who have (or are at risk of having) a developmental delay or disability. They deliver therapy and support, catering to the different needs of children from birth to adolescence. Through screening, assessments and direct intervention, they aim to unleash children’s maximum potential, guiding them towards independence and strengthened life skills, thus enabling them to be involved in the community.
For parents, as well as teachers, who are concerned that your child’s development is delayed or if there might be a disability, schedule a screening appointment with us. Early intervention is the key to positive outcomes for children with special needs. Ms Wan Kun, Co-founder of The Lighthouse Therapy Centre, Puchong
Situated in a serene shop lot in Bandar 16 Sierra, the centre is conveniently located to allow for hassle-free pick ups and drop offs for families. There’s a lift access, making it completely disability compliant. The facility contains several separate treating rooms that is equipped with a variety of therapeutic materials, as well as large windows that let plenty of natural daylight in and improved air ventilation. There are shelves filled with therapy toys to help children’s sensory and mental development. There’s also an array of equipment that strengthens children’s large muscles, balance and stability.
At The Lighthouse Therapy Centre, they offer: Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Early Intervention Programme, and Online Tele-Assessment and Teletherapy.
Therapists see children starting from birth with concerns in their self-care skills (i.e. eating, toileting, dressing, sleeping, etc.), fine motor skills, and sensory processing. They provide consultations at the centre, school and/or do house visits to support children to become independent in their everyday tasks.
This is aimed at improving the functional abilities of children with concerns in their gross motor skills (i.e. crawling, walking, sitting, etc.). The treatment will mainly consist of exercises combined with manual techniques to help children improve strength, balance, coordination and posture.
Speech and language therapists work with children with concerns in their communication, social skills, play skills (i.e. no babbling, limited words, no eye contact, no understanding of directions, etc.), or even difficulties eating, drinking and swallowing. The treatment sessions will support the child to communicate and interact with the world around them.
The Early Intervention Programme caters to ages 2 to 8 years, with half-day and full-day options available. The programme covers areas including sensory integration and physical activity, social and academic skills, and play and cognition. Children will engage in play-based and hands-on activities that develop them holistically, while being fun at the same time. Under the guidance of special needs teachers, children not only learn important academic knowledge such as literacy and numeracy, but also get involved in arts and crafts, sensory play, music and movement, fine motor activities, and small group play.
For those who are unable to visit in-person, the centre offers an alternative online tele-assessment and teletherapy platform where children and families can still get all the support, wherever and whenever, they need. Through easy-to-use videoconferencing applications, the therapists can continue to help children continue their individualised therapy plan, especially during this challenging time.
On an additional note, sometime down the road, the centre aims to offer aqua therapy to help children work on developmental skills such as crawling, walking, strength, coordination, speech, self-regulation and motor planning. Being located right next to a swimming academy makes it the ideal setting for integrating a wide range of therapeutic water activities into its services.
The practice is spearheaded by a dedicated team of professional co-founders – Nur Hidayatul Akma, Shee Wei San and Wong Wan Kun – who are licensed occupational therapist, speech-language therapist, and physiotherapist respectively. They embrace every child’s differences and work with them closely to empower them to meet their goals. At the same time, the passionate team is always mindful of the needs of the parents too. To overcome unique challenges, parents are encouraged to pay a visit to the centre for a step-by-step consultation to determine an individualised programme for their child.
