It’s more than just a school. It’s a community that shapes futures.
Stepping into Teras Murni International School (TMIS) isn’t just about academics; it’s about becoming part of a vibrant learning community where students grow into confident, globally minded individuals. The name "Teras Murni" translates to "Prestige and Real-Life Learning," and this philosophy is deeply embedded in the school’s unique approach to education - a mix of personalised learning, global exposure, entrepreneurial training, and strong community values.
Located in the bustling city of Kuala Lumpur, TMIS has established itself as a beacon of holistic education since its inception in 2015. The school consist of Teras Murni Private Primary School and Pristine International School for secondary level.
They follow the respected Cambridge syllabus across all academic levels, offering many subjects including core disciplines like English, Mathematics, and Science, as well as specialised subjects such as Business Studies, Accounting, Economics, Computer Science, and Arts. The inclusion of multiple languages (English, Chinese, and Malay) reflects the school’s commitment to preparing students for a globalised world. By offering students the opportunity to master three languages, TMIS ensures that they are well-equipped to thrive in diverse cultural and professional environments.
While final exams account for 50% of the grade, the remaining 50% is based on coursework, including quizzes, projects, and other assessments. This approach encourages continuous learning and practical work that trains students for the real world. “We want our students to thrive not just academically, but in life,” says Mr. Daniel Danny Kiiung, principal of TMIS. “We teach them skills that will help them navigate the world with confidence and integrity.”
The school thrives by giving students exposure to a rapidly globalising world. Students are given international study trips, cultural exchanges, and global immersion programs.
“Seeing the world changes you,” says Mr. Daniel. “Every year, we take our students beyond Malaysia - to Japan, China, New Zealand, Taiwan, and more. They don’t just visit as tourists; they learn, interact, and grow.” There are local trips as well, such as the memorable visit to Cherating in Malaysia’s East Coast, where students witnessed sea turtles laying eggs. These trips are more than just sightseeing, they are designed to develop independence, adaptability, and cultural awareness, preparing students for a truly international future.
Besides trips, the school celebrates a wide range of cultural events, from local festivals to western holidays like Thanksgiving and Halloween. “We want our students to appreciate and respect different cultures,” says Mr. Daniel. “We also introduce cultural exchange programs, where students from Taiwan, China, and Japan come to stay with us for a few weeks. It’s a great way for them to learn from each other.”
The school’s multicultural environment is further enriched by its Model United Nations program, where students discuss global issues and participate in debates and essay competitions “They need to understand what’s happening in the world and how they can make a difference,” says Mr. Daniel.
One of the key reasons to choose TMIS is its focus on preparing students for their future careers. The school offers career guidance and consultation, helping students identify their interests and aspirations from as early as Year 10. “We want our students to have a clear direction before they enter university,” says Mr. Daniel.
It’s certain that most students don’t experience an actual working environment until university. At Teras Murni, that changes. Year 10 and 11 students undergo a 2-3 weeks internship at law firms, accounting companies, and corporate offices, to give them a sneak peek of what the real, adult world is like. “It’s a great way for them to gain practical experience and see what their future careers might look like,” Mr. Daniel says.
“They come back transformed, knowing what it’s like to be in a professional setting, to interact with colleagues, to take responsibility. It changes their perspective on work and life” Mr. Daniel shares.
At TMIS, extracurricular activities are an integral part of the school’s lifestyle. The Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) program is one of the highlights of the TMIS experience, offering students the chance to explore their interests and develop leadership skills. “Students run their own societies, with teachers providing guidance. It’s a great way for them to learn responsibility and teamwork,” said Mr. Daniel
From ukelele clubs to fashion societies, students have the freedom to pursue their passions in the world of art, creativity and entrepreneurship whereby students have the chance to organise their own fundraising fashion shows and concerts. Not just that, sports is a cornerstone of the school. It offers basketball, badminton, volleyball, martial arts (such as Sanda, Muay Thai, and Wushu), and athletics.
At TMIS, parents are not just spectators—they are active participants in their children’s education. The school maintains regular communication with parents through WhatsApp and WeChat groups, where updates on academic progress, homework, and school events are shared. “We have monthly ‘Coffee Time’ meetings, where parents can sit down with teachers and discuss their children’s performance,” says Mr. Daniel. “It’s a small-scale, informal setting that allows for open and honest communication.”
The school also plans to establish a Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG) to further strengthen the partnership between parents and the school. “We believe that education is a team effort,” says Mr. Daniel. “Parents play a crucial role in their children’s success, and we want to make sure they’re involved every step of the way.”
What began as a modest private institution with just 12 students has now grown into a thriving international school with a current enrolment of 150 students and ambitious plans to expand to 400 students.
As TMIS continues to grow, the school remains committed to its mission of providing a holistic education that prepares students for life. “We’re constantly looking for ways to improve and expand our offerings,” says Mr. Daniel.
TMIS ultimate goal is to create a school where students feel empowered to pursue their dreams. “Besides good grades, we want our students to leave TMIS with confidence and skills to succeed in whatever they choose to do,” Mr. Daniel says. “That’s what education is all about—preparing them for the real world.”
