Sunshine Kids is a chain of preschools established by Dr. R.V. Shyam Prasad, who hails from an international education industry background. Set up in 2012, Sunshine Kids is a multiracial preschool for children of all walks of life, adhering to our MOE syllabus, and with English being used as its medium of instruction. Kiddy123 had the opportunity to chat with Dr. Shyam, who is the Founder & Managing Director of Sunshine Educational Group, and his wife, Senior Principal, Mrs Esh to learn more about their Seremban 2 Centrio branch, and what makes this award-winning preschool stand out among many others out there.
One preschool for all needs
With an aim to establish a one-stop preschool for little ones hailing from various backgrounds and destined for different kinds of primary schools, Dr. Shyam has always been adamant that the young learners at Sunshine Kids should master the language they would need to prominently use in their primary school of choice. While proficiency in English and Bahasa Malaysia are compulsory for everyone, other languages of importance to some of them include Mandarin and Tamil.
Housed in a two-storey shoplot, classes at Sunshine Kids Seremban 2 Centrio are categorised according to age-groups, starting from Playgroup, which consists of little ones ages 2 to 3 years. “The 4-year olds are grouped into a class called 4th Gold, the 5-year olds are in a class called Diamond, while the 6 year-olds, Platinum. After graduating from Sunshine Kids Preschool, or even at 5 years old, these children are welcome to enroll back in for their Cambridge Young Learners programme,” shared Dr. Shyam. The coveted programme offers three levels for their age, namely, Starters, Movers and Flyers.
While being clear that Sunshine Kids is not an autism center or a school for children with special learning needs, Dr. Shyam and his wife did however stress on the inclusiveness of their preschool, whereby they have always been willing to allow children with mild to moderate learning difficulties to be enrolled into Sunshine Kids on a trial basis, in hopes to allow them access to the quality early education they deserve. “In around 80% of these cases, after a child with learning difficulties joins the preschool and mingles around with other children, he or she would not only love spending time there, but they also do not seem to have as much learning issues to begin with!” Dr. Shyam shared, joyously. “It is the environment that brings out the best in them,” Mrs Esh chipped in, and we are inclined to agree with them both, as Sunshine Kids is indeed a highly conducive space for children to learn, grow and flourish.
Activity-Based Learning (ABL), with an emphasis on Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing (LSRW)
The well-established preschool has Activity-Based Learning integrated into every part of its curriculum. “In all the subjects taught at our preschool, our little learners will find themselves highly engaged, using their senses as well as their motor skills to the fullest, and this makes a huge difference in their learning experience. Our teachers do not merely teach, but they include their students in the lessons, allowing them to be physically involved and engaged in countless educational activities planned out for them,” Dr Shyam stated with conviction. Sunshine Kids also emphasises on the qualities of Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing (LSRW) in all its students. Every effort is made to instill these skills into them, to ensure that each child will be at the top of their game when they enter primary school.
Age groups and Programmes
The youngest age group at Sunshine Kids consists of the 2 and 3 year-olds. They are cared for by highly qualified staff who feed, bathe and clothe them, as well as put them down for their naps. Little ones will be provided with lots of beneficial play activities as well as sensory play to ensure their well-rounded development. They are offered an early start in their education as they too are introduced to ABL for the subjects of English, Mathematics, Art & Craft, Pre-writing, Music & Percussion, and Tear & Paste.
For children between the ages of 3 to 6 years, the premium preschool offers its preschool programmes as well as quality Daycare services. The subjects covered include BM, English, Mathematics, Science, Suku Kata, Jolly Phonics (from the UK), Odonata Mandarin (6 years old), Value Education, Abacus & Mental Arithmetic (6 years old), Peter & Jane, Computer, Music, Art & Craft, Yoga, and also, a choice between Mandarin, Tamil, or Agama Islam. Grammar & Tata Bahasa, as well as the coveted Cambridge Young Learners Programme are offered to the 5 - 12 year-olds.
