Yellow Submarine Preschool of Arts, Rumah Tangsi, Kuala Lumpur is a one of a kind preschool that is underpinned by an art-based curriculum to empower children to become creative learners and thinkers. Like an “arts university scaled down for children,” Yellow Submarine aims to transform education for a sustainable tomorrow through Creative Learning. Seeing that creative thinking and creative problem solving are fast becoming some of the key skills the world is looking for in the workforce, the preschool is sure to expose children to a myriad of creative experiences to help them develop the strengths they need to thrive in school and life.
Success in the future will depend not so much on how much we know, but on our ability to think and act creatively. The successful societies of the 21st century will be Creative Societies. Mitchel Resnick, Professor of Learning Research at MIT Media Lab
With other branches located in Ara Damansara and TTDI, this newly opened preschool is fittingly situated within the walls of a beautifully restored heritage building, Rumah Tangsi – now, a modern-day event space for art shows for the local community. Every area is gently illuminated with sunlight and features natural tones and textures, creating a calm environment – like Finnish preschools – that contributes to an optimal learning experience. During the day, children will have the choice to move between indoor and outdoor spaces, such as the patio, main hall, foyer, pantry, courtyards and even a toy library.
This branch caters to parents working in the immediate vicinity with the options of half-day (9am-1pm), extended half-day (9am-3pm) or full-day (9am-6pm) programmes.
Children of all ages, especially preschoolers, delight in expressing their ideas through colours, role-playing, shapes and sounds. By providing creative outlets for children to learn about the world around them do not only make them happy to be at school every day but also enhances all aspects of their development. The curriculum at Yellow Submarine thus integrates the following five creative areas of learning into its core programming:
Architecture activities give design-curious children opportunities to explore the basics of different architectural styles, model-making, geometry and construction methods. These activities foster children’s decision-making skills, for example, should the roof be pitched or flat?
Children fashion designers get to push the boundaries of style and express their own unique visions through creative use of fabrics, colours and textures, while enhancing their fine motor skills.
Whether it’s music, dance, drama or role-play, each discipline engages children’s bodies and emotions in different ways to find joy in self-expression and the ability to expand their imagination even more. Performing arts can truly enrich children’s life in all sorts of ways alongside improved motor, social and cognitive development.
Food projects are much more than just cooking and making art with food. They can teach children basic math concepts (counting the number of ingredients) and build language skills (reading recipes), plus, start them young with healthy eating habits.
Arts and crafts activities are a wonderful way for children to express their emotions and thoughts, especially those who are naturally shyer. This gives teachers better insight into how children are feeling and what’s going on in their minds.
By letting children get behind the lens, it helps them see things in a different light and find beauty in the simplest common objects around us. It also promotes better hand-eye coordination and boosts their self-esteem when they have picked up a new skill.
On top of the multifaceted creative experiences that children will have at Yellow Submarine, teachers will not neglect the basic attains of speaking, reading, writing and counting, so that children will be equipped with all the essential knowledge and capabilities to succeed on their academic pathway. Subjects such as Reading with Phonics, Early Mathematics and Science Experiments are included in the timetable to help them establish a strong foundation for learning.
Also, keep your eyes peeled for even more exciting elective classes and fun events down the road like yoga for both children and parents.
Yellow Submarine is a great reminder that there is so much more to great education than just strong academics. All aspects of the school – the curriculum, the teachers and the environment – reflect a strong commitment to nurture children’s innate capacity to question, discover and try new things, as these are crucial factors in their intellectual, social, emotional and physical growth. At Yellow Submarine, they put in their utmost effort to keep children’s hearts and minds open while they pursuit new ideas and build connections with peers. They let children be children and encourage them to see things in different perspectives and come up with unusual yet effective decisions to overcome challenges. By not restraining children’s creativity, they will definitely go far.
