In Malaysia, as in many parts of the world, the field of early childhood education is on the brink of significant change. Treetops Montessori in Johor Bahru stands as a beacon of progressive early childhood education, seamlessly blending the time-honoured Montessori philosophy with contemporary pedagogical approaches. Under the visionary leadership of its founder and principal, Ms. Andrea Chen, the institution has cultivated an environment where children are prepared for academic success and more importantly, essential life skills. Her perspective, grounded in both local and global educational practices, seeks to reshape how we approach early childhood education and to inspire a system that truly prepares children for life.
At the core of Treetops Montessori's ethos is the belief that children are innately curious and possess an intrinsic desire to learn. Montessori research underscores a fundamental truth: the first six years of a child’s life are crucial to their overall development. “We are learning so many things during this period, and there are sensitive periods when children are most receptive to learning,” says Ms. Andrea. In the Montessori method, this critical stage is seen as an opportunity to cultivate curiosity, independence, and self-discipline.
This belief is ingrained in the curriculum, which is carefully crafted to respect the developmental needs of children at every stage. Ms. Andrea points out “Montessori education doesn’t rush children. It respects their rhythm. When you allow children to take ownership of their learning, you unlock potential that is both joyful and profound.”
While Treetops Montessori remains deeply rooted in the Montessori philosophy, it also embraces a blended learning approach. Recognising that the world is ever-evolving, the school integrates various pedagogical methods to cater to the diverse needs of its students. This includes incorporating free play time, project-based learning, and opportunities for children to make decisions in their daily activities. "It's essential to follow the child and adapt to the changing world, ensuring we meet the children's needs," Ms. Andrea notes.
Treetops Montessori offers a range of programmes meticulously crafted to support the developmental milestones of various age groups for both half-day (8:00 AM – 12:00 PM) and full-day (8:00 AM – 5:30 PM) students:
For full-day programme, children take part in enrichment activities in the afternoon including a unique leadership programme that emphasises public speaking, team problem-solving, and value-based education. A street dance programme, guided by a professional coach, builds children’s confidence through creative body movement and rhythm.
From the moment you enter the gates of Treetops Montessori, you are greeted by an atmosphere of calm and intention. The space is thoughtfully designed, with natural lighting, clean aesthetics, child-sized furniture, and play areas that invite exploration.
Understanding the significance of the learning environment, the centre spans three fully renovated shop lot units to support its custom-built and purposeful features; Montessori classrooms equipped with specialised materials, a music and movement room for dance and physical activities, indoor and rooftop playgrounds for unstructured play, and a sand area. These spaces are designed to provide children with a variety of sensory and experiential learning opportunities.
The well-being of students is paramount here. The school has implemented rigorous health and safety protocols, including daily health screenings, regular sanitisation of classrooms and common areas, and the installation of close to 90 CCTV cameras to monitor activities. Additionally, the school has emergency escape staircases and multiple exits to ensure preparedness in unforeseen situations.
The preschool has its own in-house chef who prepares a rotating menu of healthy, balanced meals — from porridge and noodles to house-baked cakes and buns. Menus are reviewed regularly to ensure children receive optimal nutrition throughout the day, which consists of breakfast, lunch, and tea time snacks.
Treetops currently employs 24 educators for its approximately 160 children, maintaining low teacher-to-child ratios for quality engagement. Younger classes enjoy a 2:14 ratio, while older ones maintain 2:16. The teachers have at least a Diploma in Early Childhood Education or PERMATA certification, with more than 70% of them have over five years of experience. The teachers here are keen & fun, loves working with children, and most importantly, have good integrity.
Treetops Montessori extends learning beyond the classroom through community engagement initiatives. For instance, during National Day celebrations, children participate in fundraising activities, creating and selling crafts and food items. The funds raised are used to purchase necessities for orphanages, and children visit these homes to deliver the items, gaining firsthand experience in empathy, financial literacy, and social responsibility.
At Treetops Montessori, the relationship between the school and parents is one of trust and partnership. It is important to keep parents informed and involved in their children’s learning journey. Through regular meetings, discussions, and the use of the LittleLives app, they ensure that parents have access to updates on their child’s progress, activities, and well-being.
“Parent-teacher communication is crucial. Here, we make sure that parents understand our educational approach and the benefits of allowing their children to learn through play, exploration, and meaningful experiences,” says Ms. Andrea.
Moreover, as she is providing a haven for children to explore freely, take risks, and learn from their experiences, she stresses, “Parents need to understand that it’s okay for children to have some minor injuries or a mosquito bite as long as the experience is enriching. It’s about allowing them to engage with the world and grow from it.”
Treetops Montessori is a living testament to Ms. Andrea’s vision for a future where early childhood education prioritises professionalism, critical thinking, and personal growth. Through her work, she is shaping the future of her students and the future of early childhood education in Malaysia. With a focus on nurturing independence, confidence, and curious learners, Treetops Montessori is paving the way for a more enlightened approach to educating the next generation.
