With advances in technology and artificial intelligence, some might think of the abacus as an old-fashioned tool that is no longer relevant in modern education.
The truth, however, is far from it. Research has shown that children who learn mental arithmetic using the abacus show improved learning performance, better visual and spatial attention, and improved cognitive functions.
For parents who wish to tap into this potential for their child, Infinity Mindz Learning Centre in Eco Grandeur, Puncak Alam offers Shenmo Abacus Mathematics courses for children aged 4 to 12.
Originally from China, the Shenmo brand has been in Malaysia for over a decade. While abacus programmes are not uncommon, Shenmo stands out for its unique and personalised approach that focuses on identifying each child’s strengths, understanding how they learn, and setting them up for success.
In that sense, trainers are less like educators and more like coaches, helping to guide children by building up their confidence and improving their focus – all skills that go beyond academics.
The abacus was named a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2013, and for good reason. The magic of the tool lies in its ability to train both sides of the brain, since using one requires good hand-eye coordination, listening and analytical skills, memory, and much more.
Students use their fingers to move the beads on an abacus all while listening to math problems being read out by their instructors, or reading off question sheets. Strong concentration is required to complete these tasks simultaneously and within a time limit.
At the same time, Shenmo trainers recognise that every child is unique. Unlike traditional education systems that follow a one-size-fits-all approach, the team at Infinity Mindz tailors each lesson to the different needs of their students.
Younger children aged four and five, for example, learn using flash cards and more play-based approaches, since their fine motor skills are not yet fully developed. Once they are older, they move to more advanced techniques and practice with exercise worksheets.
One of the most remarkable aspects of abacus education is its ability to shape character. Through consistent practice and encouragement, children learn the value of perseverance, patience, and self-discipline. Mistakes are seen not as failures but as stepping stones to success. Teachers at Shenmo gently guide students to understand that challenges are part of the learning process.
The highlight for many students is participating in events like the Shenmo Cup, an international competition held annually in Malaysia that brings together young minds from around the world. These events aren’t just about winning, but celebrating progress, meeting peers, and building confidence in a supportive environment.
Parents play an important role too, which is why Shenmo actively involves parents in the learning process through regular updates, workshops, and even parent-sharing sessions. The team publishes how-to videos on their platforms so that parents too can understand how abacus training works, and help their children with practice at home.
In addition to its Shenmo Abacus Mathematics course, Infinity Mindz Learning Centre also offers Mandarin courses for children. These language classes aim to equip students with the ability to communicate confidently in one of the world’s most widely spoken languages.
The courses are designed to be engaging and interactive, blending traditional teaching methods with modern tools like smart TVs and apps. Course materials are based on the local syllabus (KSSR) and elements from the Chinese education system, creating an immersive environment where even children with little to no background in Mandarin will be able to improve their proficiency.
Lessons focus on all four skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—ensuring a well-rounded approach. By making learning enjoyable, Infinity Mindz helps children develop a genuine interest in Mandarin, whether it’s for academic purposes or to connect with Chinese culture.
