The first six years of a child’s life are critical for their learning, akin to a blank canvas ripe for painting.
As its name suggests, Dripping Colours Montessori takes this concept to heart – filling this canvas with the right ‘content’ and laying solid foundations to ready children not just for school, but for life.
Established in 2018, Dripping Colours was founded by Ms. Penny Leong, a passionate educator with a primary school teaching background. Ms. Penny recounts how surprised she felt to know that her younger relatives did not loath attending kindergarten as she had back in the day.
“I noticed that my niece and nephew actually loved going to kindergarten, and that intrigued me so much,” she shares. “They actually told me that they felt bored at home and would rather spend time in their kindergarten! I was amazed, as I never felt that way when I was a kid,” she quips.
Inspired by these experiences, Ms. Penny and a few friends opened their own kindergarten with the aim of providing quality yet fun education for little ones. Early days were tough, with Ms. Penny single-handedly running daily operations at the kindergarten – but the school’s reputation flourished, which has allowed her to focus more on developing the brand and its offerings further.
Multiple studies have shown that students thrive better in smaller group settings – something which Dripping Colours is well aware of. The Desa Parkcity branch accepts no more than 40 students per school year, and each class has a low teacher-to-student ratio: so, parents can be assured that their child is getting the personalised care and attention that they deserve.
Unlike many kindergartens that group their students according to age group, Dripping Colours places them according to their capabilities instead. “This has proven to be immensely helpful for each child in the long run, for regardless of age, children have their own unique strengths and weaknesses which teachers can work on. This kind of classification which does not prioritise on age, makes it possible to ensure that each child receives precisely the kind of help and guidance he or she needs to thrive,” says Ms. Penny.
This approach of having five to eight students in each learning group also aids teachers in managing classes as well, ensuring each child receives the kind of attention that they need to catch up in his or her development – something which is rare to see in other schools.
Continuity is an essential element in the development of a child’s early years. Learning should be reinforced both at school and at home, which is why at Dripping Colours, the school fosters open and transparent communication by updating parents daily on their child’s progress, through a unique system called the Dripping Colours Parent.
“It is a detailed report to keep parents abreast on their child’s day at school, and it covers everything from the child’s lessons learned on that day, the worksheets used, what the child had eaten, as well as all the activities for the day too,” shares Ms. Penny. Photos are also often included in these updates.
