British Montessori, Ampang

For over 27 years, British Montessori, Ampang has provided a warm and loving environment to nurture the inherent potential of each child who steps through its doors. It brings together children between the ages of 2 to 6 years, while babies 2 months onwards can enjoy the wonderful benefits of their baby spa delivered at a home centre just a stone’s throw away. Together as a school community, each child is guided to become happy, self-motivated and confident individuals who are able to contribute to the society in a positive manner, as symbolized by the lighthouse in the school’s logo.

Upon entering the school, one will find that it exudes a very calm, peaceful atmosphere that envelops children with a sense of comfort and security. In true Montessori fashion, all items including furniture, tools and kitchen are tailored to the children’s size, enabling them to move freely within the designated boundaries. The spaces are designed to be open with low, exposed shelves filled with a range of materials that supports the sensorial learner, giving him the opportunities to gradually work towards his growth in intellectual, emotional, physical and social independence.

At British Montessori, Ampang children are met where they are in their learning journey. Each child is given the freedom to explore in accordance with his own needs and interests, and progress at his own pace. It is understood that learning is not a linear process, and that children may not be prepared to acquire skills at the same time as their peers, or in line with a teacher-imposed schedule. Children who need more support with certain skills will get that support here, and those who are ready to move ahead will be able to find the challenges that match their abilities. In addition, the school offers longer operational hours and approximately 100 days extra per year compared to other similar facilities in Kuala Lumpur, giving children the time to enjoy the activities and learn at their own level of readiness.

In this purposefully structured setting, children circulate through the house to different rooms every 35 to 45 minutes. Each room is a topic room where children are encouraged to choose activities from specific work areas that enthuse their inner most core and work on them without interruption. Through these activities, they make discoveries in Reading and Writing, English, Bahasa Malaysia, Mathematics, Geography, History, Science, Practical Life, Sensorial, Arts and Craft, Agriculture Studies, Dance and Drama, and Cooking. As children repeat activities that are geared towards their learning styles, they will experience a series of successful achievements which will help build their inner confidence and develop a positive attitude that will carry them through life. Besides skill building in the core curriculum, children are also driven to understand the big world around them and their place in it. On top of that, the exposure to a diverse student population at the school allows children to interact with peers from various cultural and ethnic backgrounds, broadening their perspectives and promoting respect for others who are different.
