Apple King Special Education Centre, Sungai Chua provides special needs services for children who have, or are at risk of having, a developmental delay or disability. Services cater to children aged 3 years and above. Through screening, assessment and direct intervention, they aim to help families best care for their children.
As an experienced educator and a mother of a child with special needs, Madam Lau founded the centre with a deep understanding of how parents feel when there is a great deal of variation in their child’s development compared to most children at those ages. Working in partnership with Michelle, a professional therapist with 10 years’ experience, they are determined to give children the practical strategies to successfully navigate school and life.

They address a broad spectrum of specialty areas, including but not limited to: autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyslexia, learning disabilities and neurodevelopmental delays. No matter how challenging the hurdle is, treatment is customised for each child based on their unique needs and is provided in a non-stressful, positive environment. Therapists have the facilities to make it fun in a place that is equipped with a wide range of therapeutic equipment. There is an open-play area where children can crawl, climb, swing and be engaged in activities that develop large muscles, balance and stability. There are shelves filled with therapy toys to improve their sensory and mental development. There are also separate treatment rooms used for programmes like NeuroBrain Training.
One-to-one therapy or small group programmes listed below are tailored to give children the skills they need to overcome the challenges they face.

Early Intervention Programme (EIP) (Ages: 3 years and above) (One-to-one therapy) Young children who display signs like poor fine motor skills, sensory challenges, decreased hand-eye coordination, difficulty sitting still, emotional reactivity and limited play skills may benefit from this programme. Dedicated therapists take a developmental approach to address these areas through a unique combination of techniques, such as applied behaviour analysis (ABA), rhythmic movement training (RMT) exercises, occupational therapy (OT), sensory integration, and play- and Montessori-based activities. These will help remove barriers to help children achieve the greatest level of independence possible when it comes to learning in school and playing with friends. |
Junior Programme (Ages: 7 years and above) (One-to-one or small group programme) This caters for primary school children with learning difficulties and behavioural issues. It also serves as a school readiness programme. Led by a trained therapist, small groups of children work on enhancing their attention span, academic knowledge, behaviour management, self-help skills, and social and communication abilities. The therapy sessions strive to achieve a strong foundation for childrens’ development through academic-based activities, OT and RMT exercises. |
Neurofeedback Training Children who find it difficult to pay attention in class, hard to fall asleep at night or are moving around more than others can find Neurofeedback helpful. Neurofeedback is a type of therapy that helps children calm down and train the brain to concentrate and improve its ability to regulate bodily functions. It is especially effective for children since their brains are still flexible and habits have not matured. Children will experience improved mental performance and more effective learning ability when the brain is functioning at an optimum state. |
ABA Therapy This is helpful for autistic children and those with related developmental disorders. It uses a range of techniques and strategies that can teach children new skills to reduce their difficult behaviour, such as screaming and aggression. Children are given lots of opportunities to practise their communication, social, play and self-care skills in a small group format. Over time, they will have the ability to manage their own complex behaviours. |

These intervention programmes are paired with Neurofeedback Training to ensure the most effective outcomes. During therapy sessions, a computer programme similar to a video game is used to process children’s brain signals. The programme will then use sound or visual signals to retrain their brainwave activity towards more controlled patterns. Over repeated training and when used together with other forms of therapy, children will be able to notice a remarkable improvement in their disorders within a much shorter time frame (every case varies).
