For over half a century, Tiny-Tots Montessori Centre (TTMC) in Ipoh has been a nurturing haven where young minds blossom, imaginations soar, and lifelong friendships are forged.
Catering to children aged 2 to 6, the centre has two premises and is situated in Ipoh Garden South, nestled in a quiet and safe environment where every child feels welcomed. Over the years, it is well-received by parents in the local community and children love that it is such a happy place to be at.
“Throughout our 50 years of service, our philosophy has remained steadfast: to support children as they progress through stages of independence, empowering them through their own efforts and activities. This journey of inner growth is the heart of what we do at TTMC,” says principal Mdm. Ong Lee Li.
“Here, children take their first steps into the world of learning, experiencing the magic of storytelling, the thrill of exploration, and the value of kindness, all while realising their potential and growing into well-rounded individuals. Every child who has passed through our doors has left a lasting mark on our hearts and has become part of the rich tapestry that is TTMC’s legacy,” she adds.
As you step inside, you’ll find bright and cheerful classrooms, where children can work with various Montessori apparatus within the prepared environment. The school also utilises technology, such as through smartboards and projectors, to enhance their learning, and there is a spacious hall for music and movement sessions.
To keep up with the evolving needs of the world today, the school has adapted and enhanced their curriculum and pedagogy over the years. “The core of our programme is Montessori, with plenty of hands-on activities for the children and a focus on practical life skills,” Mdm Ong explains.
The curriculum at TTMC covers broad areas of learning, from languages, mathematics and moral studies, to science, arts and crafts, as well as music and movement. There is an emphasis on the three main languages, namely English, Bahasa Melayu, and Mandarin. Lessons are always fun and engaging – students learn not just through books, but through real-life demonstrations, practical activities, as well as engaging stories or games.
The programmes here are designed to help children meet their age-appropriate developmental goals, with plenty of opportunities to cultivate intellectual, social-emotional, physical and practical life skills. Throughout the day, children get involved in a wide range of hands-on activities, creative play, and learning that incorporates many real-life objects and experiences. There is a balance between indoor and outdoor exercises. While making learning enjoyable, the centre also places an equal focus on building a strong foundation of academic skills so that children will have a smooth transition to primary school later on.
Younger children are involved in lots of practical life skill activities, from pouring water into cups and wiping spilled water, to putting on their shoes, buttoning their shirts, and carrying their bags. While these tasks sound simple, they are crucial to develop their fine motor skills while instilling discipline and a sense of routine.
Through field trips, sports days, and annual concerts, children are afforded learning opportunities beyond the classroom. Previously, the children brought some joy and cheer by visiting an old folks home, where they put up performances to entertain senior folks at the home.
Cultural celebrations such as the Mid-Autumn Festival, Chinese New Year, and Deepavali are also fun events where parents can get involved in their child’s learning journey, bond with their children, and build a closer relationship with the school and its staff.
The personal touch is something that sets TTMC apart from other preschools. Classes are kept small with just eight students per class. Unlike some schools that have a homeroom teacher who oversees all subjects, TTMC has dedicated subject teachers who are experts in their own field.
“Aside from qualifications, what we look for are those with the mindset of an educator. Children learn differently and are unique individuals, so teachers should be able to manage these aspects, and they need to be aware of the environment to ensure the needs of each child are met.”
Teachers play a big part in creating a positive and encouraging culture, which in turn nurtures happy, healthy children. “We always encourage our children to participate in activities and express themselves, so they are confident and ready to take on whatever challenges that may come their way,” says Mdm Ong.
