In 2010, St. John’s International School, or SJIS, was established in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, near the pristine green sanctuary of the Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve. Emerging from the respected educational roots initiated in Malaysia by St. John’s Institution, the school shares a common ethos and location with its historical brother.
Standing tall with its motto ‘A Symbol of Faith and Fortitude,’ SJIS is a proud La Salle School. The Lasallian movement has enduring academic links in over 80 countries across the seas, sparked in 1680s France by John Baptiste De La Salle. The Lasallian pledge to quality education and holistic learning was brought to Malaysia in 1852 and moves forward into the future with SJIS.
SJIS offers world-class programmes from preschool all the way up to pre-university. Children learn and experience possibilities within a premise that holds a multitude of facilities, such as ICT and science labs, a futsal court, a gymnasium, a library and a basketball court.
St. John's Preschool, SJIS’ early years programme, uses the ‘Play and Learn’ concept – a learning approach that produces genuine and meaningful student outcomes through play-based practices.
Young students in this curriculum actively engage in creative and fun activities while at school. Although it is called “play,” the children have developmentally appropriate learning goals and are guided towards them by proficient teachers. Skills such as fine and gross motor, problem-solving, communication, literacy, numeracy, and concentration all evolve in an inviting environment that allows children to immerse themselves in topics.
Subjects for the preschool programme:
St. John's Preschool is designed to help young students transition to the next major phase: primary school life.
The esteemed and internationally recognized Cambridge curriculum is adopted at SJIS. The school also offers the most affordable rates for this programme, in keeping with the founding philosophy of the Lasallian movement: to make quality education accessible.
Cambridge Primary facilitates well-rounded growth, one that melds academic brilliance, soft skills and persistent curiosity. SJIS also plays its role in keeping up with state-of-the-art technologies, by giving students the chance to learn things such as robotics and 3D printing.
Subjects offered for Cambridge Primary:
Within SJIS’ premises, are a multitude of purpose-built facilities, such as ICT and science labs, a futsal court, a gymnasium, a library and a basketball court.
Both St. John's Preschool and SJIS Primary offer after-school activities – ending at 6pm – for children to progress their skills, relax and enjoy themselves. Both groups partake in nap time, tea time, moral lessons and leisure time. Among other options for the after-school programme are Mandarin classes, reading activities and educational video watching (for the preschoolers).
More than just a school, SJIS is seen as a harmonious and cooperative community. The institution recognizes the great influence of healthy parent-teacher relationships on a supportive learning environment. Through warm and open communication between parties, these key individuals in a child’s life can work together to bring up competent and confident members of society.
Of course, the teacher-student relationship (one of the central and most important relationships), is also given plenty of attention. SJIS teachers are professionals; a team full of caring and compassionate educators, committed to helping students become the best versions of themselves through academic and non-academic means.
The collaborative relationships in SJIS will go a long way in the school’s pursuit to shape students as a whole, while ensuring a high standard of scholarly success. This is one of the standout qualities of solid education.
It is without a doubt that SJIS looks towards cultivating a bright and fulfilling future for all their students. With the essential life skills and worldly knowledge provided through the curriculum – and delivered by devoted staff – children will have the know-how to tackle any challenge that comes their way.
Through its decade of existence, independent lifelong learners have emerged from the foundations that SJIS has laid down, and it is foreseeable that coming generations shall reap the benefits of a whole-being education.
