Small Wonder Malaysia, Bukit Jalil City provides children with an enriching education guided by the Montessori philosophy in a harmonious learning environment. It brings together children between the ages of 4 to 6 years, while the Junior Campus is just a stone’s throw away within the same location. Working in harness with parents, each child is guided to achieve their maximum potential to become a happy, self-motivated and confident individual. Above all else, the school looks beyond the day children graduate and leave, so they are supported as lifelong learners who will work towards a more sustainable and peaceful world.
Take a walk through the learning areas and you will find children of mixed ages enthusiastically exploring in harmony. Within this intimate little society, they develop mutual respect and learn from each other, young and old. The school exudes a very calm atmosphere that envelops children with a sense of comfort and offers them the reassurance of security. Every piece of furniture and equipment is proportional to children’s height and size, allowing children to move around independently (within boundaries). Spaces are open with exposed shelves filled with an array of specially designed learning materials that are conducive to self-education. Each child can freely choose a material that is of his/her interest and work on it for long periods without interruption.
In this carefully planned setting, children explore concepts appropriate for their developmental stage. They cover the following areas of learning: Practical Life (proper behaviour and social skills); Sensorial (exploring materials through all senses); Language (spoken and written communication on ideas or feelings); Mathematics (shape, space and numbers); Cultural Studies (studies of cultures around the world).
The curriculum gradually shifts to emphasise on academics and more complex concepts so that children will be prepared to move to primary school. Children are also supported to master multiple languages including Bahasa Malaysia and Mandarin through the school’s dual immersion programme.
Teachers endeavour to truly educate by encouraging children to be independent thinkers who will become increasingly responsible for their own education over time. The emphasis is placed on the process of learning. Throughout the series of repeated activities that are geared towards each child’s own needs and level of readiness, s/he will experience a series of successful achievements which will help build inner confidence and a positive attitude that will carry them through life. Continued joy in learning, respect for friends, self-motivation in one’s work, individuality and participation in the classroom community are all hallmarks of a child at Small Wonder.
Small Wonder highly promotes the acceptance of diversity within the school community. They implement the values of different cultures by celebrating cultural events together and encouraging parents from different backgrounds to come and share stories from different countries. This truly opens up children’s hearts and minds, and teaches them to accept and respect people who are not the same as them.
As with all good educators, teachers at Small Wonder have a constant drive to reflect, evolve and develop, whilst being firmly rooted in the school’s unwavering commitment to deliver an authentic Montessori education. Through sheer passion and dedication, they prepare children to become compassionate, confident and resilient human beings who are capable to take on whatever the world offers.
